By the
photograph in 2000 above, the Cross is still remarkably similar. The
shop on the corner has turned into a private house, but the Bemister
sign painted on its wall in 1880 and covered up 102 years later, is
now back in view. The Royal Oak ground floor window has become a door
by 1982. The lamp on the Royal Oak looks like it could have been there
since 1880, but it's relatively new! Twentieth Century gentrification
will give future historians a headache or two!
