Shitterton around 1895

Thankfully, as in villages up and down the land, the church still dominates the skyline - you can't quite say the same for our towns...There has been much infill between Bere Regis & Shitterton. Though, the village has become awash with trees and greenery; most likely due to the happy increase in both general leisure time and interest in gardening. A noticeable change is the grubbing up of several hedgerows in the fields on the slope of Woodbury Hill. This was a common practice throughout the Twentieth century as farmers toiled to increase yields from their land. Fortunately, nowadays many grants are available to encourage farmers to reinstate hedgerows. Their natural & aesthetic value is obvious - travel through some of the plains of Northern France and you'll see why.
