Woodbury Hill Fair, Bere Regis in September 1909

This photograph, by C.J. Cornish Browne of Dorchester, at first sight does not seem very interesting, but in fact, it shows the setting up of the sideshows before the crowds arrived. At the left is the coconut-shy stall with the coconuts already set up against the awning, and the rack of wooden balls by the rope. The man at right seems to be setting up some kind of weight-lifting stall, while in the background we see one of the wagons that the travellers lived in. The wagon behind the awning on the right may have contained a wild creature!
