In 1959,
the Government recognized the need for protecting our Heritage by
listing buildings of Historical Significance. Today there are over
370,000 listed buildings in England. These range from Roman Palace
remains to Victorian factories & even thatched boundary walls!
In Dorset alone there are 9,906 listed buildings; a total unequalled
by 2/3rds of the other counties of England. Bere Regis has 55 listed
buildings; including the Grade I listed Parish Church.

The
listings were compiled under a Royal Commission on Historical Monuments
(RCHM). They have since been amalgamated into English Heritage who
have renamed them the National Monuments Record.
